How to speak to a child at the scene of an accident

  1. Crouch down to not dominate the child with your posture. Sometimes support means not adding stress.
  2. A simple way of speaking means statements that are understandable for a person's developmental stage. When communicating with your child, use common words and avoid specialized expressions. There is also no point in adding strongly emotional adjectives. We want to tone down emotions, not amplify them. “You're probably in a lot of pain with your leg” is a misnomer on many levels. A more apt formulation would be “Show where it hurts you.”
  3. Don't infantilize! Infantilization, is not support, but pushing the injured person into the role of a dependent being who must rely on others. Strive to make the injured person with whom you can communicate an equal partner in the rescue process.
  4. Often, it's not what you say, but how you say and behave that will have a greater impact on the victim. Remain internally calm and think task-oriented. The affected person will follow your attitude if it is strong enough.
